"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only those who do the will of my Father" (Matthew 7:21)
Last time, we confronted a shocking truth: there are five types of believers heading to hell despite being in church. Today, we dive deeper into the first and most prevalent category—those with dead faith.
The Patient Who Never Sees the Doctor
A man with a serious heart condition went to the hospital every week, yet grew worse, not better. Why? Because he never saw the doctor. He only sat in the waiting room and went home again.
Absurd? Yet countless Christians live exactly this way.
They enter church doors week after week, but never meet Christ. They never face their sin, never weep in repentance, never encounter grace in truth. They spend a lifetime in the waiting room of religion—only to miss the very kingdom of God.
Living Faith vs. Dead Faith
What, then, is true faith?
Paul declares: "It is with the heart that one believes and is justified, and with the mouth that one confesses and is saved" (Romans 10:10).
True faith is a heart transplant. The Spirit removes the stone heart and gives a living one. Then mind, emotion, and will awaken—hungering for God, weeping at the cross, rejoicing in resurrection, choosing God's kingdom over our own.
Growth may differ, but life will show.
By contrast, dead faith says "Lord, Lord" with the lips but overflows with complaint, bitterness, and barren fruit. No matter how many artificial fruits are hung on a dead tree, it remains dead.
Judas: Three Years with Jesus, Yet Lost
Judas walked with Jesus for three years. He saw miracles, heard sermons, even served in ministry. Yet without repentance, he ended in despair and death.
He represents those with words but no life.
Nicodemus: Knowledge Without Rebirth
Nicodemus, rich in knowledge, was told: "You must be born again" (John 3:3). Only later did he move toward genuine faith.
He represents those with knowledge but no rebirth.
And countless such figures fill today's church.
Jesus' Sharp Warning
The Lord's warning remains sharp:
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only those who do the will of my Father" (Matthew 7:21).
This warning is not for unbelievers—it's for those who call Him "Lord."
On that final day, some will say:
- "Lord, did we not prophesy in your name?"
- "Did we not drive out demons in your name?"
- "Did we not perform many miracles in your name?"
But the Lord will answer: "I never knew you. Depart from me, you workers of lawlessness" (Matthew 7:23).
Examine Your Soul Right Now
Ask yourself these questions with trembling honesty:
- Is your faith alive, or is it merely religious routine?
- Do you grieve over sin, or have you grown numb to it?
- Do you hunger for truth, or are you satisfied with shallow teaching?
- Are you moving toward obedience, or justifying disobedience?
Only those who answer honestly before God will escape this tragedy.
The Difference Between Life and Death
Religion sits in the waiting room.
Faith meets the Doctor.
Religion knows about Jesus.
Faith knows Jesus.
Religion performs duties.
Faith bears fruit.
Religion says "Lord, Lord."
Faith does the will of the Father.
It's Not Too Late
If this word has pierced your heart, do not harden it. Do not brush it aside.
Fall to your knees right now. Strip away every pretense. Confess your dead faith. Cry out for the living God to breathe life into your soul.
True repentance—metanoia—is a complete turning. Not regret that changes nothing, but a revolution of the entire life.
David committed adultery and murder, yet repented with a broken heart, and God received him. King Saul offered excuses instead of tears, and God rejected him.
The difference? The sincerity of repentance.
