"Blasphemy against the Spirit will never be forgiven" (Matthew 12:31-32)
Yesterday we examined the tragedy of dead faith—those who sit in church but never truly meet Christ. Today we confront something even more chilling: the second group heading to hell despite being in the church.
These are those who blaspheme the Holy Spirit.
What Is This Unforgivable Sin?
When Jesus healed the blind, gave speech to the mute, and cast out demons, the Pharisees declared:
"He drives out demons by Beelzebul" (Matthew 12:24)
To deliberately call the Spirit's holy work the work of Satan is blasphemy.
Jesus warned with absolute clarity:
"Blasphemy against the Spirit will never be forgiven" (Matthew 12:31-32)
Think about this: to reject the Spirit is like a drowning man striking away the hand that seeks to save him.
Biblical Examples of Resisting the Spirit
Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Holy Spirit—and fell dead (Acts 5).
The Jews who stoned Stephen "resisted the Spirit with clenched teeth" (Acts 7:51).
This sin is alive today.
Some scoff at weeping repentance as "fanaticism." Others dismiss the preached Word as "legalistic" or "irrational."
But Scripture says:
"The natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God" (1 Corinthians 2:14)
Even careless words against the Spirit's work may cross into dangerous territory.
A Modern Warning
The author warns:
"Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts" (Hebrews 3:15)
When conviction comes—when the Spirit whispers to your soul—that is the moment of decision.
Will you soften and surrender?
Or will you harden and resist?
The tragedy is not that God refuses to forgive. The tragedy is that hardened hearts lose the ability to even seek forgiveness.
The Third Group: Apostates Who Abandon Faith
Peter declares:
"It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then turned away" (2 Peter 2:21)
Apostasy is not neutral—it is betrayal.
Jesus warned that the final state of such a person is worse than the first (Luke 11:26).
Examine Your Heart
Ask yourself honestly:
- Have you ever mocked genuine moves of the Spirit?
- Have you dismissed conviction as "just emotions"?
- Have you called God's truth "judgmental" or "extreme"?
- Have you grown comfortable ignoring the Spirit's voice?
If any of these strike your conscience, do not harden your heart.
Today is the day of salvation. Tomorrow may be too late.
The Hope That Remains
If you are troubled by this warning, that itself is evidence the Spirit is still at work in you.
Those who have truly blasphemed the Spirit feel no conviction. They walk away unmoved.
But if your heart is stirred—if you feel the weight of these words—then the door of repentance still stands open.
Run to it. Today.
