"Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established." - Romans 13:1
God is not the author of chaos but of order. From the cosmos to the family, from the church to society, every sphere of life carries authority ordained by Him. To submit to these authorities is not mere etiquette—it is an act of faith, an acknowledgment that we yield ourselves to the divine order of the Creator.
Yet what do we see today? Authority is mocked, parental honor despised, spiritual leadership trivialized, civil order ridiculed.
Rebellion Is Like Witchcraft
Scripture warns with chilling clarity:
"Rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry." - 1 Samuel 15:23
To despise God's order is not a small fault—it is defiance against heaven itself. This truth stretches into every part of life:
In the family, parents are entrusted with authority. In the church, shepherds are called to lead souls. In society, teachers, employers, rulers, and governments are placed for the sake of order. None of these exist by chance. To reject them is not merely to disregard people—it is rebellion against the One who appointed them.
Holy Reverence, Not Blind Obedience
Does this mean blind obedience to injustice? No. The apostle Paul himself exposed corruption, crying out: "God will strike you, you whitewashed wall!" when the high priest violated justice (Acts 23:3).
Yet the moment he realized he was speaking to the high priest, he humbled himself, saying: "Do not speak evil about the ruler of your people" (Acts 23:5).
This is holy reverence—confronting sin, yet honoring God's order even when leaders are flawed.
True repentance reshapes not only private devotion but also public conduct. How we speak to parents, how we serve in church, how we treat leaders—all reveal our posture toward God Himself. Repentance is not a hidden feeling; it is visible transformation.
When Human Authority Contradicts God
A repentant heart weighs every word and gesture as though standing before His throne. And yet, when earthly commands contradict God's Word, the believer bows to the higher authority.
Peter and John declared: "Which is right in God's eyes: to listen to you, or to Him? You be the judges!" (Acts 4:19).
"Faith does not shrink in silence—it exalts the Word of God above the decrees of men, the cross above comfort, even at the cost of persecution."
The Sword of the State
Among all authorities, the state alone bears "the sword" (Romans 13:4). This is God's mandate to restrain evil and preserve order.
Capital punishment, though feared and debated, is in Scripture the defense of life's sanctity:
"Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for in the image of God has God made mankind." - Genesis 9:6
Likewise, war is never to be waged for greed, but at times becomes a divine necessity to resist evil. Had the Allies refused to fight in World War II, the Nazi darkness would have swallowed the world. To deny such responsibility is not obedience but negligence—another form of rebellion against God's order.
The Call to Repentance in This Age
In this age that mocks authority, the church must repent—repent of dishonoring parents, of undermining shepherds, of ridiculing civil order.
If we wait for perfect leaders, we will wait forever. God calls us to honor His order even under imperfect authority.
When His people repent and return to obedience, He restores blessing over families, churches, and nations. But zeal that rejects His order—no matter how noble it may appear—only tears apart the body of Christ.
The Posture of the Repentant Heart
What does this mean practically?
In the home: Children honor parents not because they are perfect, but because God placed them in authority. Even adult children show respect through their words and actions.
In the church: Members submit to shepherds, recognizing that these leaders will give account before God (Hebrews 13:17). Criticism is not forbidden, but it must come with prayer, humility, and respect for the office.
In society: Citizens honor governing authorities, pay taxes, and pray for leaders—even when they disagree with policies. Resistance to unjust laws may be necessary, but it must never descend into contempt for the God-ordained institution of government itself.
"The way of life is found not in rebellion, but in repentance. Only in bowing before God's order can we stand firm in His truth."
A Warning and an Invitation
Scripture is unflinching: those who persist in rebellion against God's established order will not inherit His kingdom. The proud, the arrogant, the scoffer—all will be humbled.
But for those who humble themselves, who repent of their defiance and submit to the divine order, there is mercy. God lifts up the humble. He vindicates the obedient. He blesses those who honor the authorities He has set in place.
So today, examine your heart: Are you honoring the authorities God has placed over you—even when they are imperfect? Are you speaking to your parents with respect? Are you submitting to spiritual leadership in your church? Are you praying for your governing officials, or only complaining about them?
Repentance begins here—in the small, daily acts of submission that prove our hearts are bowed before the King of kings.
