"They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves" (Matthew 7:15)
Even those who truly repent soon discover: wolves lurk along the path, waiting to devour souls.
Jesus Himself warned us. These wolves wear many faces:
- Vast religious systems cloaked in Christian language
- Individuals claiming to be prophets or teachers
- Even movements that look like the faith outwardly but twist truth within
Their method is always the same: they resemble Christianity on the surface but reshape Scripture into "another gospel."
Rome's Doctrinal Corruption
History's most striking example is the Roman Catholic Church. Martyn Lloyd-Jones once described it as "a worldly political organization with the face of Christianity—the masterpiece of Satan."
Consider the distortions:
Idolatry disguised: The second commandment forbidding idols was obscured, opening the way for bowing before images.
A rival mediator: Scripture declares Christ alone as Mediator (1 Timothy 2:5). Yet Mary and saints are exalted as intercessors.
Authority distorted: The Word of God alone is supreme, but papal decrees are elevated above Scripture itself.
Grace obstructed: Forgiveness, freely given through repentance (1 John 1:9), is bound to human confession before priests.
Salvation by merit: The Bible proclaims grace alone through faith alone (Ephesians 2:8-9). Yet Rome adds Mass, purgatory, indulgences, and works.
Paul warns:
"If anyone preaches another gospel, let him be accursed" (Galatians 1:8)
Modern Sects in Sheep's Clothing
If Rome represents history's great corruption, many smaller sects today carry the same deadly poison:
Mormonism: Claims God was once a man and men can become gods. Even Christ, they say, is created.
Jehovah's Witnesses: Deny the Trinity, reduce Christ to archangel Michael, and tamper with the Bible itself, rewriting John 1:1.
Seventh-day Adventism: Invented "Investigative Judgment" to cover a failed prophecy. Elevates Ellen G. White's writings above Scripture.
Unification Church & Shincheonji: Exalt human leaders as messiahs. Teach that Christ's cross failed, or that salvation comes only through their leader.
These groups differ in appearance, but share one poison: another gospel that denies Christ's exclusivity and Scripture's authority.
The Curse of "Other Gospels"
John warns:
"If anyone comes and does not bring this teaching, do not welcome them… Anyone who welcomes them shares in their wicked work" (2 John 1:10-11)
This is spiritual quarantine. Just as a contagious disease endangers a family, so a false gospel endangers the soul.
Deception Within the Church
But deception doesn't only come from outside. Within the church, many pulpits proclaim a "cheap gospel":
- "Just believe, and you will be saved"
- Love and grace preached, but justice and repentance silenced
- The broad road offered, the narrow gate forgotten
Paul declared justification by faith, but also warned:
"Those who live in the flesh will not inherit the kingdom" (Romans 8:13)
Yet many preachers avoid such words because they offend modern ears. Sweet sermons may attract crowds, but they starve souls.
False Shepherds in the Pulpit
The fifth group heading to hell? False shepherds. Many imagine danger only comes from cult leaders. But far more fearful are pastors who stand in "orthodox" pulpits without ever being called or anointed by God.
Ministry is not a career. The pulpit is not an office gained by certificates. It is a holy calling from Christ Himself (Ephesians 4:11).
Three marks betray a false shepherd:
- Dead teaching - Knowledge without anointing becomes powerless
- No battle - Without the Spirit, they're commanders without weapons
- Fruit of ruin - No matter how eloquent, their end is destruction
The Lord's verdict is final:
"I never knew you. Depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness" (Matthew 7:23)
Your Defense
Whether vast institutions, modern sects, cheap grace, or false pastors—all spring from the same poisoned root: another gospel.
What is your weapon of defense? Not dazzling gifts or human wisdom.
Only this: the humble posture of a child before God's Word. The sword of truth, wielded daily, is our discerner and shield.
