"None is righteous, no, not one" - Romans 3:10
The Final Verdict Over Humanity
Romans has been building a courtroom. In Romans 1, Paul exposed the Gentile world that exchanged the glory of God for idols. In Romans 2, he exposed the moral and religious person who judged others while excusing himself. Now, in Romans 3, the verdict comes down with crushing clarity: “None is righteous, no, not one.”
This is not a mild statement about human weakness. It is a final verdict over the human race. Scripture does not say, “Some are righteous, but many are not.” It does not say, “Most people need improvement.” It says none. Not one. No exception is left standing.
That includes the openly immoral. It includes the respectable moralist. It includes the religious person. It includes the reader. Before the holiness of God, every mouth begins to close.
Why the Gospel Must Begin with Despair
This sounds harsh to modern ears. We prefer encouragement. We want to be told that we are basically good, that we only need direction, healing, or a little more self-confidence. But Scripture refuses to flatter us. It tells the truth because only truth can lead us to salvation.
The gospel cannot become good news until sin first becomes bad news. A patient who does not know he is dying will not seek the cure. A drowning person who thinks he is swimming comfortably will not cry for rescue. A sinner who believes he is merely imperfect will not run to the cross as his only hope.
This is why Romans 3 must come before the comfort of Romans 5 and Romans 8. Before we can rejoice in peace with God, we must know we were enemies. Before we can treasure “no condemnation,” we must understand that condemnation was real. Before grace can amaze us, pride must be shattered.
No One Seeks God
Paul continues: “No one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless.” This is not saying people never become religious. Human beings can build temples, sing songs, attend services, and speak spiritual language. But by nature, fallen humanity does not seek God as God. We seek benefits, comfort, rescue, meaning, blessing, and relief. But we do not naturally seek His holiness, His rule, and His glory.
That is the depth of sin. Sin is not merely bad behavior. Sin is a bent direction of the whole person. The mind does not understand rightly. The will does not desire rightly. The heart does not love rightly. The mouth does not speak rightly. The feet do not walk rightly. The entire human being is out of alignment with God.
So Scripture says we have become worthless. That word is not meant to deny human dignity as creatures made in God’s image. It means we have become unusable for the purpose for which we were made. We were created to glorify God, but sin twists us inward. We were created to worship, but we worship created things. We were created to love God, but we love ourselves.
The Mouth Reveals the Heart
Paul then turns to speech: “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive. The venom of asps is under their lips. Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” Sin does not remain hidden inside. Eventually, it comes out through words.
The Bible calls the throat an open grave. From a distance, a grave may look quiet. But open it, and death is exposed. In the same way, the mouth reveals the decay of the heart. Lies, gossip, slander, exaggeration, bitterness, harsh criticism, spiritual pride, sarcasm, and hidden contempt all reveal that sin is not merely around us. It is in us.
This is one reason Romans 3 is so personal. We may avoid the sins that make headlines, but who among us has never sinned with the tongue? Who has never protected self with a lie? Who has never wounded with words? Who has never used truth without love, or love without truth? The mouth is a witness in the courtroom, and its testimony is not in our favor.
The Law Stops Every Mouth
Then Paul explains the purpose of the Law: “so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God.” The Law is not a ladder by which sinners climb into heaven. It is a mirror that shows us the truth. It does not cleanse the dirt from the face. It reveals the dirt so clearly that denial becomes impossible.
This is why the Law silences us. As long as we are comparing ourselves with others, we keep talking. “I am better than that person. I am not as bad as them. I have done many good things.” But when the Law of God is placed before us, our arguments begin to die. The standard is no longer another sinner. The standard is the holiness of God.
And before that holiness, the whole world becomes accountable. Not merely criminals. Not merely atheists. Not merely immoral people. The whole world. Every culture. Every class. Every religious background. Every human heart.
The Silence Before Grace Speaks
Romans 3:10-20 is not meant to be the final word. But it must be heard before the next word can be received. God silences human boasting so that grace may speak. He closes the mouth of self-defense so that the mouth may open in confession. He strips away false righteousness so that we may receive the righteousness of God in Christ.
This is the severe mercy of Romans. It will not let us remain proud. It will not let us hide behind religion. It will not let us survive on comparison. It brings every sinner to the same place: silent, guilty, exposed, and ready for mercy.
The Law does not save us; it silences us, so that grace may finally speak through Jesus Christ.
