The Debt That Never Ends
Romans 13 moves from public responsibility to personal love. Paul says, “Owe no one anything, except to love each other.” At first, this sounds like a command about debt, and it does include the call to live responsibly. But Paul’s main point is that love is the debt Christians never finish paying.
We may pay taxes, bills, and obligations, but love remains. The believer wakes up each day still owing love to neighbor, family, church, stranger, and even enemy. This is not because love earns salvation. It is because mercy has placed us under a new obligation of grace.
The Christian life cannot be reduced to avoiding obvious sins. It is a life of active love. The question is not only, “Did I avoid harming someone?” but, “Did I seek the good of the person God placed before me?”
Love Fulfills the Law
Paul says the commandments are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does not replace holiness with sentiment. Love fulfills the moral intention of the Law because genuine love does no wrong to a neighbor.
If I love my neighbor, I will not commit adultery against him. I will not murder, steal, covet, deceive, exploit, or dishonor. Sin always turns the neighbor into an object for my desire, anger, or advantage. Love sees the neighbor before God.
This means biblical love is not vague emotion. It is concrete obedience. It shapes what we do with the body, tongue, money, time, and power. Love is not merely what we feel. Love is what mercy teaches us to practice.
Wake From Sleep
Paul then shifts the image: “You know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep.” The Christian life is urgent because salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand.
Spiritual sleep is dangerous because it rarely feels dangerous at first. A sleepy soul still knows religious words, attends familiar routines, and assumes there will always be more time. But Romans 13 says wake up. The day of Christ is approaching.
This urgency does not produce panic. It produces clarity. If the day is near, we cannot live as if darkness is home. We put off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.
Put On the Lord Jesus Christ
Paul’s final command is beautiful and searching: “Put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” Christian holiness is not merely removing bad habits. It is clothing ourselves with Christ.
To put on Christ means His character becomes the covering of our lives. We learn His humility, purity, patience, courage, compassion, and obedience. We do not merely ask, “What should I stop doing?” We ask, “How can Christ be displayed in me?”
At the same time, Paul tells us to make no provision for the flesh. Do not plan for sin. Do not feed what you are called to fight. Do not arrange your life so temptation has an easy path. Grace teaches practical wisdom.
Love in the Light of the Coming Day
The debt of love is lived in the light of Christ’s return. We love because the day is coming. We forgive because the day is coming. We pursue holiness because the day is coming. We refuse darkness because it does not belong to our future.
This gives everyday obedience eternal weight. A patient word, a pure choice, an act of service, a hidden refusal of sin, a decision to love when no one applauds: these are not small when lived before the coming King.
The Christian never outgrows the debt of love, because every day under mercy is another day to put on Christ and walk in the light.
