"To the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen." - Romans 16:27
Every true gospel journey must end in worship.
Romans does not end with human achievement. It does not end with Paul applauding the strength of the church. It does not end with a strategy, a technique, or a religious program. It ends with a doxology: glory to the only wise God through Jesus Christ forever.
That is the right ending because it has been the point from the beginning. From Romans 1 to Romans 16, Paul has shown us the ruin of man, the righteousness of God, the gift of justification, the power of grace, the life of the Spirit, the mystery of God's mercy, and the beauty of a life offered back to God. And when all of it is seen rightly, the soul does not boast. The soul bows.
This final message brings the Romans Series to its proper conclusion. We began with the gospel as the power of God. We end with the glory of God as the purpose of all things.
God Is Able To Strengthen You
Paul begins his closing doxology by saying, "Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ." That phrase is full of comfort. God does not merely command His people. He strengthens His people.
Many believers know what it feels like to be spiritually tired. We begin with conviction, but the road becomes long. We repent, but old patterns try to return. We believe the gospel, but fear, shame, temptation, and discouragement still press against the soul. We want to stand, but we know how weak we are.
Romans ends by lifting our eyes to the God who is able. Not the God who merely observes. Not the God who gives a standard and then leaves us alone. The God who justifies is also the God who strengthens. The God who calls sinners righteous in Christ also teaches them to walk in newness of life.
This is why the gospel is not only the doorway into Christianity. The gospel is the ground beneath the Christian's feet every day. We are strengthened according to the gospel, not according to self-confidence. We are strengthened by the preaching of Jesus Christ, not by religious performance. The same Christ who saves us also sustains us.
The Mystery Has Been Revealed
Paul speaks of "the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages but has now been disclosed." In Scripture, a mystery is not a puzzle that humans solve by cleverness. It is a truth God reveals in His time.
The gospel was promised beforehand through the prophets, but now it has been unveiled with breathtaking clarity in Jesus Christ. The Son of God came. He died for sinners. He rose from the dead. The righteousness of God is received by faith. Gentiles are brought in. Jews and Gentiles are made one people in Christ. Mercy reaches the nations.
This means the Christian life is not built on private imagination. It is built on revelation. God has spoken. God has acted. God has made known the way of salvation. We do not climb up to discover Him. He comes down to reveal Himself.
That truth should produce deep humility. If God had not revealed the gospel, we would still be blind. If God had not sent Christ, we would still be condemned. If God had not opened the message to the nations, we would have no hope. Salvation is not our discovery. It is God's mercy disclosed.
The Goal Is The Obedience Of Faith
Paul says this gospel has been made known to all nations "to bring about the obedience of faith." That phrase brings us back to the opening of Romans. The Christian life begins by faith, continues by faith, and bears fruit in obedience.
Faith is not passive agreement with religious information. True faith receives Christ, trusts Christ, follows Christ, and bows before Christ. It does not obey in order to purchase salvation. It obeys because salvation has been given by grace.
This is where Romans protects us from two errors. It destroys legalism because no sinner is justified by works of the law. But it also destroys cheap grace because those who are united to Christ cannot remain slaves of sin. Grace does not leave us where it found us. Grace teaches us to walk as those who belong to God.
The obedience of faith is not mechanical religion. It is the life of a heart captured by mercy. When the gospel truly enters a person, it reshapes worship, speech, relationships, money, sexuality, suffering, authority, conscience, and love. Romans has shown us that doctrine is never meant to remain on paper. Truth becomes life.
From Repentance To Gospel Depth
Before this Romans Series began, we walked through a long journey on repentance. We considered the danger of dead faith, the seriousness of sin, the poison of bitterness, the deception of false peace, the necessity of returning to God, and the mercy that welcomes the brokenhearted.
Repentance was never meant to be the end of the road. Repentance turns the heart away from sin, but then the heart must be led deeper into the gospel. That is what Romans has done. It has shown us why we needed saving, how God saves, what grace does, how the Spirit leads, why God's mercy is sovereign, and how redeemed people live in the world.
If repentance brought us back to the Father's house, Romans has brought us inside to see the riches of the Father's grace. It has taught us that our salvation is not thin, fragile, or shallow. It is rooted in the righteousness of God, secured in the death and resurrection of Christ, applied by the Spirit, and aimed at the glory of God.
That is why we cannot end this series with mere information. We must end with worship. The right response to Romans is not, "I have mastered a doctrine." The right response is, "Lord, have mercy on me, strengthen me by the gospel, and receive glory through my life."
To The Only Wise God
Paul's final words are simple and majestic: "to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen." God is the only wise God. His wisdom is seen in the cross, where human pride is shattered and divine mercy shines. His wisdom is seen in justification by faith, where sinners are declared righteous without God compromising His holiness. His wisdom is seen in the inclusion of the nations, where mercy is wider than human prejudice. His wisdom is seen in the church, where weak and strong, Jew and Gentile, broken and restored are gathered under one Lord.
We often do not understand His ways while we are walking through them. We see fragments. God sees the whole. We see pain, delay, weakness, and unanswered questions. God is weaving all things toward the glory of Christ. Romans teaches us to trust the wisdom of God even when we cannot trace the whole path.
So let the final word be glory. Glory not to human willpower. Glory not to religious reputation. Glory not to ministry success, theological intelligence, or moral improvement. Glory to God through Jesus Christ.
If the gospel has awakened you, give Him glory. If grace has forgiven you, give Him glory. If the Spirit is sanctifying you, give Him glory. If Christ has held you when you could not hold yourself, give Him glory. And if you are still weak, still learning, still being formed, do not despair. God is able to strengthen you according to the gospel.
Romans ends where every true gospel journey must end: not with human boasting, but with glory to the only wise God through Jesus Christ forever.
