"Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed." - Revelation 5:5
Revelation 5 begins with tears.
John sees a scroll in the right hand of the One on the throne.
It is sealed.
A search is made for someone worthy to open it.
No one in heaven or on earth is found worthy.
And John weeps much.
That is not theatrical emotion.
It is the grief of realizing that creation cannot save itself.
If no one can open the scroll, history remains unresolved.
If no one can open the scroll, justice remains unanswered.
If no one can open the scroll, the human race is left to itself.
John's tears are the tears of all created insufficiency.
They are the tears of discovering that no mere creature is enough.
But heaven does not leave him there.
Do Not Weep
One of the elders speaks the word John needs to hear.
"Do not weep."
Then comes the announcement.
The Lion of the tribe of Judah has prevailed.
That is a triumphant declaration.
Something decisive has happened.
Someone worthy has appeared.
History is not trapped after all.
Creation is not left to perish in its own helplessness.
The story is not abandoned.
That is why this scene matters so much.
The gospel is not merely that Christ helps us feel better.
It is that Christ alone is sufficient where all creation fails.
The elder does not say, "Do not weep, because man has improved."
He says, "Do not weep, because the Lion has prevailed."
The Lion And The Lamb
But when John turns, he does not see brute force.
He sees a Lamb standing as though it had been slain.
That is one of the deepest revelations of Christ in the whole book.
The Lion has prevailed as the Lamb.
The conqueror is the sacrificed One.
Victory came through obedience, sacrifice, and blood.
Heaven corrects our instincts here.
We expect conquest to look like domination.
We expect power to look like crushing force.
But the kingdom of God reveals another kind of triumph.
The Lamb stands.
He was slain, yet He lives.
He bears the marks of sacrifice, yet He reigns in victory.
This is not weakness defeated.
This is holy love triumphant.
If the church forgets this, it will begin to admire worldly methods while speaking Christian language.
Revelation will not let us do that.
Why The Lamb Is Worthy
Why is He worthy?
Because He was slain.
Because by His blood He redeemed people to God from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.
The Lamb is not worthy in an abstract way.
He is worthy because He accomplished redemption.
He obeyed where Adam failed.
He submitted where sinners rebelled.
He gave Himself where we deserved judgment.
The road to the scroll ran through suffering obedience.
The right to unfold history belongs to the One who perfectly fulfilled the Father's will.
This is why the scroll of history is placed into the hands of the crucified and risen Christ.
The future does not belong to Caesar.
It does not belong to the beastly powers of the age.
It belongs to the Lamb.
That is one of the strongest comforts in all of Revelation.
The Prayers Of The Saints
The elders hold golden bowls full of incense.
We are told exactly what that incense is.
It is the prayers of the saints.
That means prayer is not wasted sound.
Prayer rises before the Lamb.
Prayer is remembered in heaven.
Prayer is gathered into the movement of God's purposes.
The church often thinks prayer is the least dramatic thing it does.
Heaven does not think so.
Heaven treats it as precious.
Heaven receives it as part of the unfolding work of God.
The praying church may look weak on earth, but heaven does not regard it as weak.
This should strengthen every weary believer who has ever wondered whether prayer matters.
It matters more than we know.
Worthy Is The Lamb
Then heaven erupts in worship.
"Worthy is the Lamb who was slain."
That is the center of everything.
Not worthy is empire.
Not worthy is human power.
Not worthy is our own strength.
The Lamb alone is worthy.
And because He is worthy, John does not have to keep weeping.
Neither do we.
The church may still grieve.
It may still suffer.
It may still groan under the weight of history.
But it does not groan without hope.
The Lamb has prevailed.
The church endures because the scroll of history is held not by chaos, but by the Lamb who was slain and now reigns.
