"Because you say, 'I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing' - and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked." - Revelation 3:17
Laodicea is frightening because it did not know it was sick.
It did not imagine itself as spiritually weak.
It did not see itself as needy.
It thought it was rich.
It thought it was secure.
It thought it had everything it needed.
That is what makes this church so terrifying.
Its greatest problem was not simple weakness.
Its greatest problem was self-deception.
A church that knows it is poor may still cry out for mercy.
A church that thinks it has need of nothing is already in great danger.
Laodicea is a warning to every generation that visible success can hide invisible ruin.
It is possible to look stable and be spiritually collapsing.
It is possible to look prosperous and be empty before God.
It is possible to keep the machinery of religion running while communion with Christ has grown cold.
This is not merely a problem for ancient Laodicea.
It is a standing danger for the modern church.
