"We were by nature children of wrath" (Ephesians 2:3)
Why does God demand from us such piercing repentance?
Because we were never righteous to begin with.
Scripture declares: "We were by nature children of wrath" (Ephesians 2:3).
We are like princes struck with amnesia—forgetting the Father's house, chasing after husks in a distant land. This is humanity apart from God.
The Physician and the Sick
Unless a person sees this dreadful truth, no change is possible.
A physician is useless to one who insists he is healthy. Salvation cannot reach the soul that refuses to admit its sickness.
For this reason, the very first cry of Jesus' public ministry was not a promise of blessing, but a command that shakes existence itself:
"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near" (Matthew 4:17)
Repentance is the threshold. Without it, no one enters.
Repent Before You Believe
Mark records the order plainly:
"Repent and believe the gospel" (Mark 1:15)
Repentance plows the hardened soil of the heart so the seed of faith can take root. Without brokenness, there can be no life.
At Pentecost, Peter declared Christ crucified and risen. Stricken with guilt, the crowd cried, "What shall we do?"
Peter's answer was not a quick prayer formula but a divine demand:
"Repent, and be baptized… for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38)
The order is unshakable—repentance, then faith.
Two Kinds of Repentance
Not all "repentance" is the same. Scripture uses two words:
Metamelia (μεταμέλεια): mere regret, like the groan of a drunkard after a night of ruin. It feels sorrow, but never changes.
Metanoia (μετάνοια): a complete turning, a radical reorientation of mind and life. This alone is saving repentance.
Yet many churches are filled with people who know only metamelia. They mistake worldly labels—career, wealth, success—for their identity.
To them, the call to repent sounds strange. But Scripture rips away the disguise:
We are sinners by nature, spiritually dead, enslaved under the prince of the air, objects of wrath (Ephesians 2:1–3).
That is who we truly are.
Why Repentance Is Our Only Hope
If anyone is to be saved from the second death, there is one way:
Strip off false identities, confess the truth of our condition, and turn in metanoia to Christ.
Why Christ alone?
Because He alone bore our sins, broke the power of death, and rose to eternal life.
The gospel is urgent because humanity's condition is desperate. By nature, we are not children of light but children of wrath.
Only through repentance and faith in Christ can wrath be removed and life begin.
The Great Reversal
Dead, enslaved, condemned—that was our destiny. But Scripture proclaims the greatest reversal in history:
"But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love… made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)" (Ephesians 2:4–5)
In God's courtroom, we stood condemned. The Law testified against us. Satan prosecuted. The sentence was death.
Then Jesus stepped into the dock and said, "I will pay."
On the cross He bore our guilt, curse, shame, and death, and gave us His holiness, righteousness, glory, and life.
In that exchange, our identity was transformed:
- From children of wrath → to children of love
- From slaves of Satan → to sons and daughters of God
- From citizens of hell → to citizens of heaven
This is the gospel.
And the only doorway into this new life is repentance—not shallow regret, but the decisive turning of a life back to God.
